New tenant being sought for home of long-established Coleraine store
The home of one of Northern Ireland's longest-running independent department stores is seeking a new tenant.
The listing of Dixons of Coleraine's four-storey building comes shortly after the owners announced they would cease trading in 2020.
The building, which sits on 25 Church Street in the town, covers 15,000sq ft and has a cafe on its second floor. It fronts the town's main shopping street.
Opened in 1895, Ian Dixon's family has run the store for four generations. He said the company took the decision due to his retirement: "Nobody is closing us down, I have decided to retire," he said.
Listed by estate agencies O'Connor Kennedy Turtle (OKT) and Bensons, the site is suitable for a variety of uses, subject to planning permission.
Henry Taggart at OKT said: "While the much-loved Dixons store closing will doubtless create a sense of genuine loss in the region, this at the same time represents a rare opportunity for either local business expansion into this sizeable unit or of course for a new entry retailer or other commercial trader to come to the town for the first time.
"Coleraine is the ideal location to serve a prosperous and diverse populous as a university town and the self-styled capital town within the Causeway Coast area, it draws in trade from Ballymoney, Portrush, Portstewart, Ballycastle and Limavady so has over 100,000 people within its catchment area.

"The overspill from regional tourism to the town from the Giants Causeway and the Causeway Coast A2 route also is an important contributor to the town's popularity."
Mr Taggart said vacancy levels in the town "buck a trend".
Elsewhere in the commercial property market a prime office rental site at Hawthorn Office Park, just off the M1 on 39 Stockmans Way in Belfast, is seeking at tenant. It covers 1918 sq ft and comes with six car park spaces.
In Lisburn, a warehouse spanning almost 10,000 sq ft is up for sale for £280,000. Situated close to the M1, the unit in Blaris Estate benefits from vacant possession.
