Northern Ireland tech firm Kainos increased its workforce by 300 people in the past year, a new trading update by the plc has revealed.

The London Stock Exchange-listed digital service and platform provider said its total number of employees and contractors worldwide stood at 1,470 at the end of March, an increase of 301 people since April 1 2018.

The new trading update described strong growth in Kainos' digital services division, driven by digital transformation and workday services. Momentum has been sustained with government, commercial and healthcare clients.

The international client base has also continued to expand, supported by the group's broadened European and North American footprint.

Kainos said it has continued to acquire new national and international clients for its digital platforms.

In February Kainos announced a £7.05m deal to buy the Movie House Cinema's Bankmore Square site on Belfast's Dublin Road.

The company currently has 650 staff in Belfast working across nine buildings throughout the city. It said its new office complex could eventually house 1,000 people.

Planning permission is already in place for a 250,000 sq ft 12-storey office complex on the Dublin Road site.

But Kainos has confirmed that it's planning a downsized development, expected to total around 110,000-115,000 sq ft and be ready by 2021.

The tech firm plans to initially take around 65,000 sq ft and sub-let the rest of the new office block.

As the company grows, the expectation is for Kainos to expand throughout the rest of the structure.
