Over 74,000 businesses, from shops to restaurants and law firms, will find out their new rates valuations today.

Land & Property Services is publishing new valuations for business premises around Northern Ireland, after revaluation Reval2020 was carried out.

Businesses, in particular shopkeepers, have been calling for rates reductions to reflect changes in their sector, such as growing competition from online retailers.

Rates are one of the biggest overheads facing many businesses.

From 11am today, they will be able to find estimates of their new valuations online, giving them an indication of what their bills will be from April.

Trade body Retail NI and commercial property agents Osborne King will hold an information seminar about the new rates on January 20.

Retail NI chief executive Glyn Roberts said Reval2020 was of "crucial importance" to retailers.

"In the last revaluation, over 70% of Retail NI members saw an increase in their rates bill," he said.

"It is our hope that this revaluation will not be a repeat of this.

"It is absolutely crucial to get across to business owners that they can appeal if they are unhappy with the draft valuation."
