Stunned visitors at a National Trust beach in Co Antrim found themselves caught up in a big rescue effort to save sinking cattle from the sea.
Beachgoers rushed to help the stricken herd at the popular White Park Bay near Ballycastle shortly after lunchtime yesterday, however, they were eventually forced to alert the coastguard and rescue crews.
A witness described how the rescue was launched when one cow waded into the water and "dug its hooves into a soft spot of sand". He added: "The rest just followed and despite a big effort people couldn't do anything so called for help."
