Seeds sown in trade mission to America

By Mark Edwards

More than a dozen local businesses are hoping to tackle the US market after taking part in a cross-border north west trade and investment mission to Boston.

Business representatives and councillors from Derry City and Strabane District Council travelled to Massachusetts to network with US counterparts.

The Clinical Translational Research and Innovation Centre (C-TRIC), which aims to reduce both the time and costs of research and development of health technologies, also took part in the trade mission.

Barry Johnston, commercial manager of the Altnagelvin Hospital-based operation, said: "There were a number of aims for the trip. Primarily to make and strengthen business connections in the region to enhance the profile of C-TRIC as a contract research organisation and bio-incubation space.

"Additionally I believed it would be useful to go and see how health and life sciences companies operate in another region. Massachusetts was of particular interest due to the region's focus on this industry.

"It has substantial activity in health and life sciences, with a great mix of larger multi-national companies right through to early stage start-ups."

Another trade mission to Philadelphia will take place next summer.
