West Belfast may get new sports hub

By Andrew Madden

The Department for Communities (DfC) is hoping to build a new sports facility in west Belfast.

Plans filed with Belfast City Council show that the DfC aims to create a sports 'active zone' at the Frank Gillen Centre, next to the Westlink.

The potential facility will consist of a sprint track, a multi-use games area, outdoor gym equipment and a community garden area.

Street lighting, high security fencing, a boxing area and a junior play area is also envisioned for the project.

The Frank Gillen Centre opened in December 1994 and is run and administered by The Divis Joint Development Committee.

Frank Gillen was a community activist who died in September 1994.

The architects behind the project are Belfast-based McAdam Design, who previously worked on Belfast's £4.5m Custom House Square project.
