Alert over phone apps that covertly store contact lists

By Staff Reporter

Smartphone apps that secretly harvest your phone's contacts are compiling massive databases storing billions of numbers - including those of VIPs like former Prime Minister David Cameron and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

According to a BBC probe, the apps promise to block spam calls and let people check calls from numbers they do not recognise - but they can also secretly collect all numbers and contacts on your phone.

The apps ask users to upload their phone's contact lists when they install the software, giving the apps huge databases of contacts.

Data watchdog bodies are investigating, the BBC reported.
