Top Notch: Minecraft creator Markus Persson sold his $2.5bn stake to Microsoft after one tweet

BY HAZEL SHEFFIELD

When Minecraft creator Markus Persson aka Notch decided he could no longer cope with the game’s obsessive community, he used the social networking site to ask if anyone would be interested in buying him out.

Someone did: Microsoft. For the princely sum of $2.5 billion.

No sooner had Persson sent the tweet saying he was exhausted and wanted to “move on with life” in June last year, the ceo of Mojang, the company that owns Minecraft, got a call from Microsoft asking if Persson was serious.

Persson also received offers from Activision Blizzard and Electronic Arts according to Forbes, but he turned down EA because he "did not like their policies".

The Forbes cover story also suggested that Persson spends his post-Minecraft days running up huge tabs in Swedish nightclubs.

In keeping with past form, Perrson took to Twitter to contest the notion that he is “dedicated to partying his money away”.

Anyway, he said, even if he did spend all his time in nightclubs, he couldn't party hard enough to squander away the interest payments from the sale of his stake in Mojave.
