TalkTalk hack attack: customer data stolen
TalkTalk customers are being warned that personal data including details such as names, address, credit card and bank details, may have been stolen by hackers.
Police are now investigating after the telecoms provider reported it had been hacked on Wednesday.
TalkTalk said it was now contacting customers to inform them they may be at risk.
It is the third time in the past 12 months that the broadband and phone provider has been hit by data breaches.
In a statement on their website TalkTalk said: "We are very sorry to tell you that on Thursday 22nd October a criminal investigation was launched by the Metropolitan Police Cyber Crime Unit following a significant and sustained cyberattack on our website on Wednesday 21st October.
"The investigation is ongoing, but unfortunately there is a chance that some of the following data may have been accessed:
- Dates of birth
- Email addresses
- Telephone numbers
- TalkTalk account information
- Credit card details and/or bank details
"We are continuing to work with leading cyber crime specialists and the Metropolitan Police to establish exactly what happened and the extent of any information accessed."

Dido Harding, chief executive of TalkTalk, said: "We take any threat to the security of our customers' data extremely seriously and we are taking all the necessary steps to understand what has happened here. "
Ms Harding told the BBC that all 4m UK customers could 'potentially be affected' and that they would be offered one year of free credit monitoring.
The company's website is currently down. Customers are asked to call up to service their account.
