Schrader Electronics is a leading provider of sensor-rich hardware and software solutions to customers in the automotive industry, selling both directly to major car manufacturers and via distributors.
Schrader Electronics is a wholly owned brand of Sensata Technologies following a 2014 acquisition. Sensata Technologies has interests in 13 countries globally and has more than 21,000 employees. In addition to working in the automotive industry, Sensata also serves the heavy vehicle & off-road, industrial & commercial, marine, and aerospace industries.
There are over 50 Sensata sensors within cars. In addition, it offers around 1,640 other sensors which deliver a safer, more efficient and a more comfortable experience within its other market segments.
With pre-tax profits of £102m in 2020, Schrader Electronics qualifies as our number one company. The profit figure includes $10m of dividend income. John Simpson, who compiles the Top 100, comments that the figure was retained within pre-tax profits in order to reflect the investment in Northern Ireland by the business.
The company says there is a sense of pride and integrity in everything it does, from how it is governed to its responsible sourcing practices. As part of Sensata, Schrader Electronics currently employs over 900 highly skilled hardware engineers, software engineers, manufacturing technicians and support staff in Northern Ireland and in its after market sales around the world.
The company is synonymous within the tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) market after pioneering the technology for leading vehicle manufacturers. TPMS are now standard safety features on all cars in North America and Europe, growing globally in Asian-Pacific countries, as well as the heavy vehicle off-road market.
The products ensure that tyres remain inflated to the correct pressure and alerting drivers if there is an issue. By accurately monitoring tyre pressure, the sensors help drivers to avoid serious accidents, reduce environmental impact, and save money on fuel.
The company designs, tests and manufactures these products in its facilities in Antrim and exports them globally with strong markets in Europe, Asia and the United States over recent years.
With changes in the automotive industry and to legislation in recent years, the company has refocused efforts towards supporting customers to transition to an electrified future.
Alongside its parent company, there is active investment in electrification initiatives. The growing market for electric vehicles, e-mobility applications for heavy vehicles, charging infrastructure and industrial grid management, all present significant new opportunities for business development over the next five to 10 years.
The company has focused on research and development and the development of new products for these markets. Products are based on hardware and software engineering in order to provide data-driven, innovative solutions and insights for customers.
Diversity, equity and inclusion is an important aspect of work at Schrader Electronics. The company believes that diversity benefits employees, customers and shareholders and that a diverse workforce makes a better company.
Schrader Electronics has lodged a planning application for a £16.5m research and development facility in Newtownabbey proposed to accommodate its engineering workforce.
Working with JH Turkington & Sons Ltd, it plans to build a research, testing and office space for its engineering and software development teams at the Global Point Business Park. The planned two-year construction phase will support 150 jobs for suppliers and sub-contractors and has been designed to meet BREEAM sustainability standards to minimise impact on the local area.
Along with others in the Sensata group, the company has adopted a new post-pandemic hybrid working pattern for its engineering and support employees. The planned new technology centre is being designed to meet the company’s Back to Better hybrid working model which will see some employees splitting their time between the office and home.
