French-owned Michelin opened its plant in Ballymena in 1969 specialising in the production of heavyweight radial tyres for trucks and buses, largely for export to the North and South American, Asia and European markets. The Northern Ireland operation is part of an international tyre manufacturing business with commercial facilities in 170 countries.
Over the last few years, the Ballymena plant has achieved record levels of output and productivity, gained recognition for its safety record, environmental performance and for providing support to small and medium-sized businesses. In 2010, Ballymena was awarded the Carbon Trust standard for reducing carbon emissions by 23%, only the third company and the second manufacturing operation in Northern Ireland to achieve the standard. The site also achieved platinum status, ranked number one out of 145 companies in Northern Ireland, for its environmental management system.
Michelin employs around 3,500 people in the UK.
