The Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) is to review the rosters of thousands of workers at Dublin Airport to enhance its ability to deal with a surge in activity at the gateway.

Three-quarters of the more than 3,000 staff at Dublin Airport work shift arrangements on a 24-hour, seven-day a week basis, 365 days a year.

The DAA has said that it needs to "enhance workforce engagement" in order to help it cope as the airport gets busier.

Last year, Dublin Airport handled 31.5 million passengers, compared to just under 30 million in 2017.

The number of Northern Ireland residents using the airport in recent years has also been climbing, and reached just under 1.2 million in 2017, according to the airport.

The DAA is meeting with firms later this month that are interested in helping it deliver the "roster model transformation".

The firm, headed by chief executive Dalton Philips, said that it wants a third party to conduct a review of existing rosters across its business units.

It also wants to "determine from a resource planning and staff engagement perspective whether current arrangements (many of which are longstanding) are fit for purpose and will continue to meet both staff and business needs as the airport expands further".

The DAA said the roster review should "determine [an] optimal rostering solution for 24/7 operations which will deliver an appropriate balance between staff preference and attendance flexibility to meet operational needs".

It wants roster models for specific business areas that would "deliver substantial improvements for both staff and business operations".

"It is envisaged that the key capabilities required to deliver this work will include project management, analytics, expertise in staff rostering, modelling and change management," it has told firms interested in the role.
