A Belfast-based employment law consultancy has revealed it has experienced a more than 40% spike in redundancy-related queries from worried employers across Northern Ireland last month.

Peninsula claimed the collapse of Stormont and the continuing uncertainty over Brexit was behind the rise.

Yesterday Peninsula's employment advice service team leader, Jenni Barkley, said: "The advice team in Northern Ireland have experienced a 41% spike in redundancy-related queries in the month of June.

"The instability of the Northern Ireland government has contributed to the increase alongside the continuing uncertainty of Brexit.

Ms Barkley explained: "Key considerations for employers when facing making redundancies is compiling a sound business rationale and consulting with employees in the correct time frames."

She added: "Employers who find themselves in this difficult situation should seek advice where possible to ensure they fully comply with requirements for what can be a complex procedure."
