Michael Fletcher has been appointed as the new chief executive of Nisa, following the departure of Ken Towle who is joining Asda’s executive leadership team as retail director.

Previously chief commercial officer for The Co-op, which acquired Nisa Retail in 2018, Fletcher will be supported by Nigel Maxwell, newly appointed as regional retail manager for Northern Ireland.

Fletcher joined The Co-op’s food business in 2013, leading the ‘new business’ agenda including the Co-op’s sustainability strategy.

He has extensive operational experience, developing and leading commercial strategy, opening new markets and leading integration synergy initiatives.

Over the past two years, while facing the challenges Covid-19 brings, Fletcher has overseen the successful deployment of the Retail Business Transformation programme, which delivers a significant step change in the Co-op’s proposition capabilities in 2021.

He led the team that acquired Nisa, helping create the new operating model for Nisa, enabling Nisa to leverage synergies between Coop and Nisa and drive greater value for partners.

Prior to The Co-op, he spent 22 years at Tesco, having joined the Tesco graduation programme in 1991.

Fletcher held numerous commercial roles across fresh and ambient, including delivery of value through price. His first Tesco director role was in 2001, and he went on to be commercial director in Tesco Malaysia and Ireland. Fletcher led the Tesco group procurement function and the savings programme in Asia central Europe and UK.

Married with three children, he has ambitions to play golf, cycle and sail but tends to be found on school sports fields including helping coach at his local rugby club.

Keen to support child education, Fletcher is a governor of Bebington High School, part of the Co-op Academy.

"I am delighted to take on the leadership of the Nisa business,” said Fletcher. “I know many of the partners and I look forward to meeting many more as we work together to make the very most of an exciting future."

Towle said: "It has been a privilege to lead the Nisa business. Nisa is fortunate to work with fantastic Partners from whom I have learnt so much. I wish everyone continued success in the future."
