SPAR Drumquin is under new ownership, with its well-known former proprietor Gerald McKenna opting to retire after 38 years operating the successful store, handing over the property to Jonathan Millar.
McKenna opened the store in 1983 as a VG, rebrandeding the store as a ViVO in 2004, and then as a SPAR in 2014. He invested over £100,000 in the business to evolve around the changing needs of the community, and the store won a coveted CTN Convenience Store of the Year award in 2010.
His family history associated with the location, however, predates the VG opening, with parents Micky and Eileen trading from the site as far back as the 1950s.
“The store is a hub of the local community, we have established ourselves as trusted neighbours in Drumquin and have supported many local groups, organisations and initiatives as well as providing our essential services,” said McKenna.
“Retirement is bittersweet; however I am very proud of the legacy of our store and my parent’s legacy that came before us. All our children’s work ethics were developed in this shop, and we have worked with some of the best employees in our local area providing a friendly and personal service.
“I’m delighted to hand the keys over to Jonathan and his family, and I am confident Jonathan’s experience will allow him to continue our passion for serving the local community.”
Millar is originally from Limavady, is currently living outside Omagh town, and has a background in retail.
“Taking over the reins at SPAR Drumquin is a big honour as Gerard has left a successful and thriving business with a fantastic team of staff,” he said. “I am really looking forward to this next chapter in my career and working with Henderson Wholesale and the many local suppliers and brands they bring to our shelves.
“I’d like to wish Gerard all the best with his retirement with Jacqueline and look forward to welcoming them in store very soon.”
