Electrifying: Peugeot's new 3008 Hybrid4

By Roger St Pierre

Innovation has become something of a byword at Peugeot in recent times.

The latest addition to the French company’s never less than interesting range is the 3008 Hybrid4 – the world’s first diesel hybrid crossover.

Power comes from a 2.0-litre 163-bhp diesel mated to an electric motor that has a maximum power output of 37 bhp. This power is put down onto the road by a highly efficient four-wheel drive system.

A 35 per cent improvement in fuel consumption is just one of this benefits of this latest development in hybrid technology. It’s claimed that 75-mpg is easily attained.

Emissions are improved too, noise levels are very low and it is possible to choose from four different operating modes: ZEV, 4WD, Sport or auto, to suit varying driving needs.

For ultimate environmental friendliness, thecHYbrid4 can be run in electric only mode, dubbed ZEV (zero emission vehicle),

Changing of modes is simply operated via a knob on the car’s centre console.

Roadholding is pin sharp, the rear module of the Hybrid4 system including a multi-arm rear suspension system.

The aim of all this is to appeal to customers who are not only looking for environmental friendliness and technical sophistication but also for real driving enjoyment.

Already having earned a strong reputation for its crossover combination of MPV, SUV and estate car advantages the pretty 3008 makes a perfect platform for the diesel hybrid concept.

3008 goodies include a vast panoramic glass roof and more than enough stowage places for all your acquired motoring junk. The cabin is pleasant and very well thought out.

All in all, this is a great family car, Hybrid4 being the icing on the cake,

£26,995 is not exactly budget but there’s a payback in low running costs and the 3008 Hybrid4 is pleasant to drive too.
