Ford has unveiled a 55th anniversary special edition of its world-beating Mustang sports coupe.

The Mustang55 celebrates the birthday of the famous ‘Mustang’ nameplate. It features an exclusive exterior design, a remodelled cabin and exclusive 19-inch alloys.

The Mustang name first appeared in 1964 – hence the birthday celebrations – effectively creating the ‘pony car’ class of US muscle cars (these were affordable sporty coupes with long bonnets and short rear ends).

Ford has sold more than 500,000 sixth-generation Mustangs worldwide since 2015, including more than 48,000 in Europe. For the past four years it has been the best-selling sports coupe on the planet.

Based on the powerful 450PS Ford Mustang 5.0-litre V8, the new Mustang55 Edition features unique exterior styling including distinctive bonnet and side-stripes, badging, and optional rear spoiler, alongside a new higher-spec interior.

Available in fastback and convertible body styles, the 55 edition – shown in new Twister Orange paint in our photos - includes black, dissolve-effect stripes for the low-profile bonnet and lower body sides, and a black painted roof for fastback models that complements the gloss-black 19-inch alloy wheels.

Shadow Black Mustang55 models feature silver stripes. Convertible models feature a black cloth roof.

Mustang55 models equipped with Ford’s six-speed manual gearbox feature a unique moulded gear-shift knob, while 10-speed automatic models feature a unique alloy metal gear-shift knob. Heated and cooled front seats are standard.

Also included is Ford’s SYNC 3 connectivity system with DAB+ radio, a 12-speaker B&O Sound System, and FordPass Connect on-board modem for better connectivity.

The Mustang55’s 450PS 5.0-litre V8 engine delivers 527Nm of torque, allowing a best 0-62mph time of 4.5 seconds, and a top speed of 155mph.

“Mustang is one of an exclusive group of vehicles to achieve more than half a century of continuous production, and customers’ appetites for the world’s best-selling sports car show no sign of waning,” said Ford’s Roelant de Waard.

“Our new Mustang55 is the essence of Mustang, combining exciting performance, bold design, and comfort-enhancing technologies like our FordPass Connect on-board modem and B&O Sound System.”

At the same time as revealing the Mustang55, Ford also unveiled changes to some of its lower-spec Mustang models.

The entry-level 2.3-litre four-cylinder EcoBoost Mustang is revamped with updates inspired by Shelby versions (seen in new Lucid Red in our photos).

The original Shelby Mustang was a 60s and 70s high-performance variant built custom manufacturer Shelby American.

The new Shelby-inspired changes include new 19-in alloys, new door mirrors, unique new bonnet stripes, revamped spoiler and grille.

The EcoBoost models also now come with a “Good Neighbour Mode” which can be programmed to limit exhaust noise at certain times of the day.
