Hyundai slips a sporty i30 N-Line Fastback into its small family car range

By Paul Connolly

Hyundai continues its journey into becoming a well-rounded mainstream manufacturer with a sporty twist on its i30 small family car.

Hard on the heels of its i30 N hot hatch, the Korean manufacturer has introduced a sporty N Line sub-division, and this week unveiled pricing and spec for a ‘Fastback’ version.

Essentially, N Line is a sports-focussed hybrid between the standard i30 and the performance-orientated i30 N hot hatch model.

All of this is important, because just a few years ago it would not have seemed feasible that Hyundai would be able to compete in the hot hatch market, which was previously the preserve of the likes of Ford (the Focus ST) and Honda (Civic R).

The fact that Hyundai has introduced not just the hot hatch version, and now the N Line halfway-house version, demonstrates the increasing sophistication of the company.

It is, to put it bluntly, now a fully mainstream auto maker, and an increasing force to be reckoned with.

The i30 Fastback N Line builds on the recent reveal of the i30 N Line hatchback.

Fastback is an automotive term that refers to a sloping rear end, a bit like a coupe, more stylish than the utilitarian hatchback with its bigger boot opening.

Hyundai says the i30 Fastback N Line enhances the standard i30 car with dynamic design features and tuned driving characteristics.

The Fastback N Line trim features exterior and interior design elements carried over from the Fastback N hot hatch, with chassis refinements and suspension setting changes to achieve a more dynamic drive for the 1.4-litre T-GDi engine.

The upgraded exterior design includes a front bumper exclusively accented with a silver character line and Hyundai’s signature Cascading Grille with mesh pattern, as well as black bezel surrounds on the headlamps.

Also carried over from the i30 Fastback N hot hatch is the rear bumper that features a red reflector line, the N signature triangular fog lamp and aerodynamic diffuser.

Hyundai has added N Line badging to the front wings, whilst in the cabin, there’s N-branded sport seats, a leather sports steering wheel and an N gear shift knob.

As with all i30’s, the i30 Fastback N Line offers good levels of safety equipment as standard including  Lane Departure Warning System, Lane Keep Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking and Hill Start Assist Control feature on all models.

All N Line cars benefit from Centre Console Display, 8" Touchscreen Display Audio with Smart Device Integration & DAB, supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

In addition to performance styling, the i30 Fastback N Line models fitted with the 1.4 T-GDi engine also receive changes to the mechanical set up of suspension, brakes and engine response as well as Michelin PS4 tyres.

Prices start from £20,495 for the i30 Fastback N Line 1.0 T-GDi 120PS 6 speed manual, which offers cloth sports seats with manual height adjustability to both passenger and driver’s side, with an additional electrically adjustable lumbar support on the driver’s side.

Air con, an auto dimming rear view mirror and black headlining are also standard equipment. This model is also available with a 1.4 T-GDi 140PS engine, with both 6-speed manual and 7-speed DCT drivetrains.

The more powerful i30 Fastback N Line + 1.4 T-GDi 140PS 6 speed manual (from £23,760) builds on the N Line trim level by offering heated faux leather and suede sports seats with electrically adjustable lumbar support for both driver and passenger, manual height adjustment and drivers side memory function.

N Line + trim also includes dual zone climate control, heated steering wheel, LED headlamps and auto rain sensing windscreen wipers. An 8” touchscreen sat nav with Traffic Messaging Channel, Mapcare and LIVE Services is a customer option. The N Line + is also available with a 7 speed DCT transmission.

Hyundai Motor UK boss Ashley Andrew said: “The i30 N range has been extremely well received by customers so far, with N and N Line models quickly accounting for 50% of all i30 sales.

“The introduction of the i30 Fastback N Line …  will deliver more of the N magic across our range.”

All i30 Fastback N Line models come with Hyundai’s five-year unlimited mileage warranty, roadside assistance package, five-year ear annual health check, and 12-year anti-corrosion warranty.
