Porsche adds a third electric variant to the Taycan range … and brings the price point down to £83k

Porsche has added a new trim level to the all-electric Taycan model – and given it a price of £83,367.

The Taycan 4S, unveiled at the LA Motor Show, sits beneath the Taycan Turbo S and Taycan Turbo in terms of speed and performance.

The introduction of the Taycan 4S means you can now get an all-electric four-door Porsche coupe for £83k, significantly less than the £115,898 asked for the Turbo and £138,826 purchase price of a Turbo S.

This will, Porsche believes, bring Taycan ownership to a much wider marketplace – and given the up to £30k price differential they’re bound to be correct.

You will, however, have to compromise a little for the privilege of owning the entry-level model of Porsche’s first ever series production electric car range.

The Taycan 4S will hit 0-62mph in as fast as 4 seconds, compared to the Turbo’s 3.2 seconds and the Turbo S’s 2.8.

Power is up to 530PS compared to the Turbo’s 680PS and the Turbo S’s 761PS.

And range in the entry-level car at least is more limited: the 4S will officially do between 206 and 252 miles on the combined cycle compared to the Turbo’s 236 - 279 miles.

The super-powerful Turbo S has, not surprisingly, a lower range than the Turbo at 241 – 256 miles – which is still ahead of the 4S.

There’s some compromise on features, too, for the 4S. That power difference is caused by a less-powerful rear motor and a smaller 79.2kWh battery (although if you pay extra the 4S can be optioned with a bigger 93.4kWh battery which offers an extended range of 287 miles and 571PS).

A few of exterior design features are gone, too, and you get special new 19-inch wheels. The good news is that the interior is pretty much the same as the Turbo.

The design is described as “clear” and “puristic”, with a front end that is wide and flat with highly contoured wings.

Distinguishing features of the Taycan 4S compared with the Turbo and Turbo S include the aerodynamically optimised 19-inch Taycan S Aero wheels and the red-painted brake callipers.

The front apron with new geometry, side sills and rear diffuser in black ensure further visual differentiation. LED headlights including Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS Plus) are equipped as standard.

Inside, a central 10.9-inch infotainment display and an optional passenger display are combined to form an integrated glass band in a black-panel look.

As standard, the Taycan 4S comes with a partial leather interior as well as front comfort seats with eight-way electrical adjustment.

Porsche has used a centrally networked control system for the Taycan chassis. The integrated Porsche 4D Chassis Control analyses and synchronises all chassis systems in real time. As standard, the Taycan 4S features adaptive air suspension with three-chamber technology including electronic damper control PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management).

The Taycan 4S has six-piston fixed-calliper brakes on the front axle with internally vented cast iron brake discs. Four-piston brakes are used on the rear axle.

The Taycan 4S is on sale at Porsche dealerships now for deliveries beginning in January.
