Revealed: Jaguar’s all-electric I-PACE, the first mainstream rival to Tesla

Jaguar has unveiled its Tesla-rivalling electric I-PACE model ahead of its official debut at the Geneva Motor Show.

The slick-looking SUV will cost £63k on the road in the UK for an entry-level S model.

The car is Jaguar’s first truly electric car, sitting on its own aluminium platform with an all-electric motor and 90kWh composed of high energy density lithium-ion pouch cells.

It is the first proper Tesla competitor from an established premium manufacturer, although others are hard on its heels, and a variety of others are on offer from smaller and specialist outfits.

The car will not be made in the UK, but rather at a facility in Graz, Austria by auto specialists Magna Steyr, which has worked on a host of other premium vehicles for the likes of Mercedes, MMW, Audi and Aston Martin.

Billed by Jaguar as “the world’s smartest five-seater sports car”, the I-Pace is new from the ground up.

Jaguar says it will provide a range of up to 298 miles on a single charge, and that this figure is based on new “real world” tests.

With a 50kW DC rapid charger – the kind found at most public charging stations – I‑PACE can achieve up to 168 miles of range per hour, although these time may vary in real world conditions.

All that electric power means it’s fast, too: instant torque and all-wheel-drive traction gives the I‑PACE sports car-style acceleration: 0-60 in 4.5 seconds, according to the manufacturer.

It is driven by two permanent magnet synchronous electric motors, similar to the technology found in the I‑TYPE Formula E racing car. The motors output 400PS and 696Nm of torque.

Jaguar says internal space is “exceptional”, with five-size seats, innovative storage, a substantial rear load space of over 656 litres (1,453 litres with the rears seats folded) and 27 litres in the front storage compartment.

Some clever invention -  like housing the electric motors in each axle - has allowed Jaguar to keep a large load space, and a low boot floor as well as a dramatic sporty slim line roof.

There is, of course, the latest in technology to be found on board. The Touch Pro Duo infotainment system comprises of a 10” Touchscreen integrated into the dashboard and a lower 5” Touchscreen with multi-function dynamic dials.

4G Wi-Fi capability is standard and many car functions can be controlled via smartphone app.

The car comes in three models: S, SE and HSE.

The S model costs from £63,495 on the road in the UK, and comes very well equipped including 18" 15 spoke 'Style 1022' alloys, 8-way semi-powered Luxtec front sport seats, Park Pack (360⁰ Parking Aid, Rear Traffic Monitor, Clear Exit Monitor and Park Assist) sat nav, secure tracker and a Smartphone Pack.

The SE model costs from £69,495 and gets advance safety features as well as 20” alloys. The Drive pack includes Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, High-speed Emergency Braking and Blind Spot Assist.

The range-topping HSE model costs from £74,445 and gets a long list of extras including 18-way heated and cooled Windsor leather electric memory front sport seats with heated rear seats and Meridian Surround Sound System.
