Revolutionary radar brakes rolled out by Volkswagen

Volkswagen has announced it will make autonomous emergency braking (AEB) systems a standard feature across all its vans.

Radar-based AEB technology has been described by safety experts Thatcham Research as “probably the most significant development in vehicle safety since the seat belt”.

Starting this week, AEB is being specced on the VW van fleet — the Caddy, Transporter and Crafter — which will, says Volkswagen, make them the first manufacturer to standardise such technology throughout its commercial van range.

According to VW, autonomous emergency braking has been shown to cut rear-end crashes by nearly 40%.

This has the potential not just to save lives and reduce accidents, but also to cut other costs like insurance, repairs and downtime.
