Dance work Hard To Be Soft takes a long hard look at Belfast life

By Cate McCurry

Award-winning choreographer and dancer Oona Doherty will unveil her slant on Belfast life in a new four-part production.

Hard To Be Soft, which opens at The MAC theatre in Belfast tonight, has been described as a reflection on the city and the experiences and realities of people living there today.

The production has been in development for two years, with music produced by David Holmes.

For Oona, it is a four-part "physical prayer" for Belfast.

Known for making gritty, raw work, that challenges masculinity and social norms, Oona creates an alternative reality for Belfast.

She said: "For me, what's missing in Belfast is platonic love and physical contact, especially among working-class men.

"Things like hugging or holding hands, regardless of gender or age are important, and I think induce openness and empathy."
