Capaldi takes Doctor around the globe
New Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi is to circle the Earth without the aid of a Tardis as he and co-star Jenna Coleman go on a world tour to promote the show.
They are to visit five continents in the space of 12 days, calling in at seven cities, ahead of the launch of the new series, Capaldi's first as The Doctor.
The pair will be accompanied by the BBC1 programme's executive producer Steven Moffatt when they head out on their world tour jaunt in August for publicity and fan events.
It begins in the UK, visiting Cardiff on August 7, moving on to London and winding up in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil on August 19. Along the route it will call in to South Korea, Australia, the US and Mexico.
Fans saw Capaldi become the latest regeneration of the Doctor at Christmas and he has spent the past few months working on his first full series, starring alongside Coleman who returns as assistant Clara.
Show bosses say it is the largest promotional tour undertaken for the show which is seen around the world and is on a high after its 50th anniversary celebrations last year. A special episode, The Day of the Doctor, was broadcast in 98 countries simultaneously and was seen in more than 1,500 cinemas.
Capaldi said of the tour: "It's fantastic that so many people across the world love Doctor Who. After eight months solid filming deep in the world of monsters, Jenna and I are thrilled to be heading for the planet of fans."
Amanda Hill, the chief brands officer at the corporation's commercial arm BBC Worldwide, said: "Doctor Who encompasses British creativity at its best and we're passionate about it being on the world stage.
"This tour is something normally reserved for Hollywood blockbusters but with Doctor Who it appears you can do anything you dream of and continue to challenge what's perceived as the norm in TV."
Further details of the itinerary will be posted at www.doctorwho.tv/worldtour and the series - which includes guest roles for Frank Skinner, Ben Miller and Keeley Hawes - will be screened from August.
