EastEnders star John dies aged 75

John Bardon, the actor who played Jim Branning in EastEnders, died yesterday aged 75.

The TV star, whose passing was announced by the BBC, suffered a stroke seven years ago that left him needing constant care.

Actress June Brown, who plays his screen wife Dot, said: "I am so sorry that John has passed away but hope that he is now at peace after seven difficult years. I shall miss him very much as I loved him dearly."

A spokesman for the BBC added: "Everyone at EastEnders is heartbroken to learn that John has sadly passed away. His bravery and courage in battling against the devastating effects of his stroke were admired by all."

Bardon first appeared in the show with a brief role in 1996 before joining full-time in 1999. His last appearance on the soap was three years ago.
