Calum Best has dismissed claims he is "too old" to take part in racy reality television programmes after it was revealed he will appear on the first ever series of Celebrity Ex On The Beach.

The show sees eight single men and women head to an idyllic beach to enjoy a summer holiday in paradise - until their exes turn up.

Calum, model son of football legend George Best, will be joined in the Marbella villa by Joey Essex, former Love Islanders Michael Griffiths and Georgia Harrison, model Lorena Medina, TV personalities Lateysha Grace and Marissa Jade, as well as Olympian Ashley McKenzie.

The 38-year-old, who first went looking for love on reality television in 2005 on Celebrity Love Island, faced backlash for being older than his fellow contestants.

"Is there an age limit?" he quipped after social media users pointed out his advancing years.

One Twitter user wrote: "Isn’t Calum getting a bit too old to be doing these programmes?"

"No," another user replied. "But when some of the other people are young enough to be your kid, probably time to call it a day."

Speaking previously on Mel B's podcast, The Truth Flirts, the son of the late football star admitted dating a lot of women when he was in his 20s but would not be as socially active.

“In my younger years, I dated all the time. Nowadays, I’m single still but I don’t date that often, I’m super picky…  because I don’t want to waste their time or my time,” he told the former Spice Girl.

“In my early 20s I was out every night going on dates.”

Best added: “I’m 38 now and I’m single and in my head I’m like, ‘The one is there somewhere’.

“Sometimes I mess up and put myself a time limit and I’m like ‘Ooh, if it’s not happening by the time I’m 40 I’m gonna think of all these alternatives’.”

Calum is no stranger to reality television and has made a name for himself on the circuit.

In 2010, he appeared on Come Dine With Me where he dined with Janice Dickinson, Samantha Fox and Jeff Brazier and in 2012 he won RTE's Celebrity Bainisteoir, which saw him managing GAA team Moy Davitts of Mayo.

He came third when he took part in the fifteenth series of Celebrity Big Brother in 2015 before coming seventh when he entered the house again two years later.

Calum also sought to find love on Celebs Go Dating in 2017.

He has previously been linked to a host of high-profile women including Lindsay Lohan, Sarah Harding and Jodie Marsh.
