Ann Widdecombe’s ungainly tumble during Strictly Come Dancing rehearsal

We have seen her flying through the air but now she has crashed to the ground.

It was a case of smash, bang, wallop for Strictly Come Dancing star Ann Widdecombe as she landed with both feet in the air during rehearsals for tonight’s show.

The contestant slipped out of the grasp of her dancing partner Anton du Beke as they took to the floor during rehearsals in Blackpool yesterday.

The professional ballroom dancer grabbed the self-proclaimed dancing elephant by the foot in the hope of keeping her from falling flat on her back.

But the former Conservative Party minister could not be rescued as she tumbled to the floor.

Wearing a red woolly jumper with a Scottie hound design Widdecombe yesterday made a dog’s dinner of the samba routine she was practising ahead of tonight's live show.

She will be hoping she can stay on her feet when the pair dance to The Tavares hit Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel.

Widdecombe has made headlines for her leaden-footed appearances on the hit show. Last month she made a dramatic entrance when she was hoisted into the Strictly studio from the ceiling on a flying trapeze.

She earned praise from the judges for her daring stunt. Len Goodman said: “I thought seeing Ann Widdecombe in a truss coming down from the sky was worth 50% of the TV licence.”

Bruno Tonioli agreed: “Truly out of this world ... Starship Widdecombe.”

But she still only managed to come second from the bottom after the judges’ votes were cast.

Widdecombe has become an unlikely hit with the public despite her lack of grace.

The 63-year-old has faced criticism in recent weeks over her lack of co-ordination but has defied the judges’ comments by staying in the competition.

Last week talented member of Destiny’s Child, Michelle Williams was booted out of the contest, leaving Widdecombe safe for another week.
