Atwell: Hendrix film labour of love

Hayley Atwell has said Jimi Hendrix film All Is By My Side is not a biopic, but a "love letter" to the rock star's time spent in London.

The Captain America star plays Irish socialite Kathy Etchingham, who had a relationship with Hendrix during his time in England, opposite Outkast star Andre Benjamin, aka Andre 3000, as the guitar legend.

Hayley said: "This was kind of a love letter to that particular time, it's not a cradle to grave story. It just takes three years of Jimi Hendrix's live when he came to London and it explores the relationships he had with the people that he met, and the city itself and how that shaped his music."

She said working with Andre was "wonderful".

Hayley added: "He's an incredibly committed and intelligent actor and is very instinctive and I think he gives a really special performance."

It was revealed last year that as the film, written and directed by Red Tails writer John Ridley, does not have the full participation of the Hendrix estate, it will not include any of his music. Instead Andre perform covers of classic songs by artists including The Beatles, Muddy Waters and Chip Taylor.

Hayley said everyone on the project felt a duty to do justice to their real-life characters.

She said: "The director had written it himself so it was a labour of love for him, and a project he'd been working on for the best part of 10 years.

"So we all came to it with a lot of respect and sensitivity given the subject matter and some of the people that are in the film still exist."
