Belfast music group aiming for Channel 5 show final

Belfast-based performing arts group MT4UTH will be hoping to sing and dance their way into the final of a Glee-type talent search tonight after securing the judges’ ‘wildcard vote’.

The 10-strong group impressed the panel — and the public — last Sunday with their “weird and wonderful” production of Feeling Good on the Channel 5 show Don’t Stop Believing.

But MT4UTH found themselves going head to head with another Northern Ireland group, Fusion Theatre, to win over the judges after The Songtimers secured their place in the final through the public vote.

MT4UTH and Fusion came second and third and both had to perform again to impress pop stars Anastacia and Duncan James, actress Tamzin Outhwaite and Charles ‘Chucky’ Klapow.

James was the only one of the four judges to give Fusion Theatre his vote, with the other three opting for MT4UTH.

It now means the group will have to perform again tonight, along with the other three wildcard winners from previous weeks — Sing Live, Swish and Dice — and this week’s wildcard winner.

Dean McCullough, a member of MT4UTH, said the group was loving every minute of the show and did not want the experience to end. “We are up against some technically good, precise acts this Sunday, all chosen by the judges, so it’s a hard one to call,” he said.

Meanwhile, a Belfast-born actress who grew up in New Zealand will be hoping to win over the public when she also takes part in tonight’s show with a 10-strong performing arts group.

Caroline Fox (29), whose parents June and Charlie moved back to Northern Ireland in 2002, will be performing with the London-based ToneAcity in a bid to earn a place in the show’s final.

The group will be singing the 1980s pop classic Waiting For A Star To Fall as they go up against five other acts.

Caroline said: “We’re really looking forward to performing on Sunday night and hope the public get behind us and give us their votes as we really need them to progress to the next stage.”

Don’t Stop Believing is on Channel Five tonight at 7:55pm
