Celebrities feel the heat of Hell’s Kitchen

The celebrities competing in the new series of Hell’s Kitchen have faced their first challenge — making a sandwich.

Chef Marco Pierre White ordered the eight contestants, who include Anthea Turner and her husband Grant Bovey, to make the simple snack in an effort to learn more about them.

The ex-Blue Peter presenter and her husband are taking part in the ITV1 reality show alongside Dynasty star Linda Evans, comedian Adrian Edmondson, Shameless star Jody Latham and rapper Ms Dynamite, whose real name is Niomi MacLean-Daley.

Model Danielle Bux, who is the fiancee of football legend Gary Lineker, and former Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar are also facing the heat of the kitchen.

Explaining why the celebrities would be making a sandwich, White said: “It would give me great insight into their technical ability and into their personalities — what I’d like them to give me is what they like to eat.

“If they make it simple and honest, that’s who they are. They make it flash, they’re flash.”

Grading the finished efforts, White praised Bovey’s club sandwich with chicken, Parma ham, bacon and salad, but called Ms Dynamite’s prawn, tomato and crisps combination “truly nasty”.

She retorted: “Well, I like it.”

The celebrities’ next task would prove significantly more challenging. Arriving last night, the contestants expected to unpack and settle into their home for the next fortnight, so were shocked to learn they faced 60 hungry guests.

White told his recruits: “I like discipline, I like respect, I like hard work, it’s as simple as that. Some of you will stay longer than others, it’s your choice how long you stay because I sack four of you.”

The Michelin-starred chef’s ability to chose who gets fired in the early rounds, before the public vote is introduced, marks a change to the show’s usual format.

The celebrities’ first service will be shown in the opening episode tonight, which will also reveal how they fare when they face famous diners this evening.
