Charlize Theron wins impact award
Charlize Theron is to receive the Variety Indie Impact Award for her support of independent film.
The Oscar-winning actress will be presented with the gong at the Palm Springs film festival on January 8. The award, sponsored by Mercedes-Benz, celebrates actors who are able to move easily between indie films and mainstream studio blockbusters.
Charlize, 36, won an Oscar in 2003 for her portrayal of serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster and is both a producer and star in new Paramount comedy Young Adult.
The South African actress has always been a staunch supporter of independent films. She has always balanced big studio projects with speciality productions such as In the Valley Of Elah and The Burning Plain.
Previous winners of the award include Philip Seymour Hoffman and Mark Wahlberg.
The presentation to Charlize will be part of an event featuring Variety's 10 Directors to Watch honorees, their website reports.
