Christina Ricci joins Smurfs sequel

Christina Ricci is on board for the Smurfs sequel.

The Pan Am actress has signed up to voice a character in the follow-up to last year's movie about the blue cartoon creatures, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

She will play Vexy, an evil version of Katy Perry's character Smurfette.

Brendan Gleeson has also joined the cast of the movie, which will see many of the stars of the first film reprising their roles, including Katy, Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays.

The sequel will see villainous wizard Gargamel (Hank Azaria) still trying to capture the Smurfs' powers. Part of his new attempt involves creating Smurf-like creatures known as Naughties, including Vexy.

The Smurfs 2 will be directed by Raja Gosnell and is due to be released in 2013.
