Christine Bleakley has denied reports that she upset X Factor twins John and Edward Grimes at an awards ceremony by making a cutting remark to them.

According to the Sun, the Co Down beauty told the pair: “You paint a bad picture of Ireland” as they were about to go on stage at the National Television Awards to perform their new single Under Pressure.

The newspaper claimed the twins were “devastated” by the remark.

However, a spokeswoman for The One Show presenter said that the incident had been completely misconstrued and that Christine had been enjoying some banter with them before their performance.

She pointed out that Christine — who is dating Chelsea and England star Frank Lampard — had defended the pair in radio interviews during their time on The X Factor. And she said the 30-year-old had been shocked by the allegations that she had hurt the Lucan teenagers.

She said: “Christine wanted a picture of the boys with her co-presenter Adrian Chiles and they told her they didn’t know who he was because Ireland only had three television channels,” said the spokeswoman.

“Christine said something along the lines of “we’re not that backward” and there was a bit of banter but she stood chatting to them for a while.

“She actually backed them during the X Factor when she was doing radio interviews so the story came as a bit of a shock.”

It was reported that John and Edward were devastated at the comment, but later admitted that they didn't know who she was.

A friend of the prime-time presenter’s said: “Anyone who knows Christine would know she would never say anything upsetting to anyone. It’s not in her nature.”

Meanwhile, it’s been confirmed that Christine was forced to change her mobile telephone number after Patrick Kielty revealed it on The One Show.

According to her spokeswoman, she was bombarded with around 300 phone calls and text messages after Kielty’s silly slip-up.
