Clement: Fake blood smells horrible

Jemaine Clement has revealed he hated the scent of the fake blood used in his new film What We Do In The Shadows.

The Flight Of The Conchords star had to tuck into the sticky formula, meant to emulate blood, for his portrayal of vampire Vladislav, in the mockumentary.

"It was corn syrup with blackcurrant. It tasted fine, but it doesn't smell great. It's got a horrible smell, very sugary, like old pop," he admitted.

His co-star Taika Waititi joked his outfits were torture, saying: " The first week was pretty fun, and then, getting into a tight costume became more annoying.

"My look was more of a Brad Pitt meets Tom Cruise in Interview With A Vampire. That went hand in hand with my putting weight on. So the bigger I got, the more annoying being a vampire was."

What We Do In The Shadows, based on a short film written and directed by the duo, centres on three vampires living in modern society in New Zealand. It opens in UK cinemas on November 21.

"We wanted to make a long, proper length film. We tried it out first as a short to see what it would be like, and to see if the idea sustained for more than a minute," Taika explained.

"It was really fun to shoot. We wanted to tell a story about people who flat share together and we wanted it to be a mainstream hit, so we put vampires in it because everybody wants to watch vampire movies."

The pair are vampire buffs, and are particularly fond of the Swedish-language film Let The Right One In.

Jemaine said: "I used to be obsessed with them as a young man. My favourite recent one is Let The Right One In. It's a great movie, especially the original with the subtitles."
