Colin Farrell, Saoirse Ronan and Michael Fassbender named as British stars at London film awards

By Sarah-Jane Murphy

The London Critics' Circle have bowed to an online backlash and renamed some of their nomination categories to reflect the fact that Irish actors, actresses and film makers are not 'British'.

When the nominations were revealed this morning Irish cinema fans were dismayed to see that Colin Farrell, Michael Fassbender and Saoirse Ronan were listed under the categories British Actor of the year and British Actress of the Year respectively.

In response to the criticism the London Critics bowed to pressure and changed the names of the categories in response to criticism.

'Carol' is the hotly tipped movie of 2015 as far as the Critics Circle are concerned.

'Carol' received nods for Best Film and Director of the year as well as nominations for Leading Actress for both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara.

Kerryman Michael Fassbender is nominated for Leading Actor for his roles in 'Steve Jobs', 'Macbeth' and 'Slow West'.

Andrew Haigh's '45 Years' notched up six nominations, including Leading Actress for Charlotte Rampling and Leading Actor for Tom Courtney.

Carlow native Saoirse Ronan has been nominated for Leading Actress for her performance in 'Brooklyn' and 'Lost River'.

Meanwhile Colin Farrell gets the Leading Actor nod for his turn in 'The Lobster' and 'Miss Julie'.

The movie is also in contention for Best Film and for Director of the Year.

Two documentaries, 'Amy' and 'The Look of Silence' earned Film of the Year nominations in addition to being listed in the documentary shortlist.

Tom Hardy is a contender for Leading Actor for his performance in 'Legend' and for Supporting Actor for 'The Revenant.

Other films that made the coveted Film of the Year list are 'Room', 'The Martian', 'Inside Out' and 'Spotlight'.
