Cosgrove: Dad's protective like Gru

Miranda Cosgrove has revealed her own father is just as overprotective as Despicable Me dad Gru.

The 20-year-old actress, who has reprised her voice role as Margo in the sequel Despicable Me 2, admitted her father Chris shares some qualities with Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), the screen dad of her alter-ego.

"My dad is exactly like Gru. He reminded me so much of Gru," she said.

In Despicable Me 2, Margo - now a teenager - is discovering boys, which sets Gru in overprotective mode, especially when she meets Antonio Perez (Moises Arias). Miranda revealed her father was the same.

"My dad hasn't seen the movie yet but my mum saw it with me in Australia at the premiere. I know my dad's excited to see it, but I just can't wait until he sees those parts because I know he's going to relate," she continued.

She added: "Those were some of my favourite scenes to record - the scenes where she's falling for Antonio. She absolutely loves him.

"I also really liked getting to see Gru fall in love."

Miranda said getting to know Steve is "really fun". "We all recorded individually but I know him the best for sure, just from doing publicity. We got to go to Australia together. He's just a really nice guy, really cool," she said.

She continued: "It was really exciting getting to do this one. I went in three or four times to record, before finding out what the full idea was for the movie, and each time I went in, the animators were a little further into the process so it was exciting seeing it all come together."

Kristen Wiig, Russell Brand and Ken Jeong also lend their voices to Despicable Me 2, which is in cinemas now.
