Cuaron considers Fantastic Beasts

Alfonso Cuaron could be wrangling with strange and bizarre creatures for JK Rowling's Harry Potter spin-off, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them.

The Oscar-winning Gravity filmmaker - who previously directed the third Harry Potter film, Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban - is said to be in discussions to direct the prequel for Warner Bros, reported film blogger Nikki Finke.

"I hear Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity, HP/Azkaban) deep in talks to direct JK Rowling's Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts. Perfect pick," she tweeted.

The film, inspired by JK's 2001 fictitious wizard textbook of the same name, which is used by Hogwarts pupils, will be released in US cinemas on November 18, 2016.

The author is writing the screenplay about magizoologist Newt Scamander, the book's fictional author. The film will be set before the adventures of boy wizard Harry and his friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, played by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint in the franchise.

Mexican filmmaker Alfonso - who won best director for his outer space drama Gravity, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney - previously directed Y Tu Mama Tambien and Children Of Men.
