Daniels: Pettyfer for gay hero role
Lee Daniels has revealed he is developing a new film, starring Alex Pettyfer as a gay action hero.
The Butler filmmaker told Out magazine that an "interracial love affair action movie" is in the works, with the Magic Mike actor playing one half of the gay couple. The director is now on the look-out for an African-American actor to star alongside him.
"Alex Pettyfer is in it, I have to find the right black guy opposite him. He's so hot, isn't he? So hot," he said, adding: "And so aware of his hotness in a way that's so... I love him to death."
Lee described the film as a homosexual version of Mr And Mrs Smith, which starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as married assassins, who realised they had been hired to kill each other.
"It's like a gay Mr And Mrs Smith, but with two good-looking guys as the action heroes. We don't find out they're gay until the end of the movie," he explained.
The Precious director admitted that many Hollywood studios were initially reluctant to back the project, claiming that a lead gay character in an action film would not attract audiences, until the box office success of his new film The Butler, which stars Oprah Winfrey, Forest Whitaker and David Oyelowo amongst others in the star-studded ensemble cast.
"I don't think I'm going to have a problem now. I made 100 million US dollars (£62.5 million) for The Butler. I'm in a rare group. So this is something I feel good about," he said.
Alex and Lee previously worked together on The Butler, where the 23-year-old played plantation owner Thomas Westfall.
