David Oyelowo for A United Kingdom

David Oyelowo is set to star in and direct A United Kingdom, a film about the true love story between an heir to the throne in Botswana and a UK office worker, Deadline has reported.

The Butler actor will play Seretse Khama, who married English office worker Ruth Williams after a whirlwind romance in London, but faced opposition from both of their families, the British government, the Tribal elders of Botswana and the apartheid government of South Africa.

Seretse faced exile and abdicating the throne, but the couple's son Ian Khama is now the freely elected president of Botswana.

The Khama family said in a statement: "We are pleased that the story of Sir Seretse Khama and Lady Khama is being brought to life in the film A United Kingdom by Pathe.

"Our family has been regularly involved in development of this film so far, having collaborated closely with the screenwriter Guy Hibbert in what we believe is a wonderful script.

"We are equally pleased that David Oyelowo will lead the cast as Seretse."

David is currently shooting thriller Captive, which he also produced, and has just finished filming on Nina, a biopic of Nina Simone, where he stars opposite Zoe Saldana.

A United Kingdom is due to begin filming in London and Botswana in 2014.
