Farrelly: Carrey inspired Dumber To
Peter Farrelly has revealed that it was Jim Carrey who got Dumb And Dumber To on track.
Jim and Jeff Daniels have reprised their lead roles of hapless and dim-witted best friends Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne respectively in the comedy sequel, which is once again directed by Peter and his brother Bobby.
Peter admitted Jim had doubts about making a third film, telling SoFilm: "Jim didn't want to do another one, though Jeff was desperate to.
"Then, two years ago, Jim phoned me up and said: 'I was in my hotel last week and it was on television. I sat down to watch it and I was screaming with laughter. I thought we gotta do another one. Just for the joy it brings people...' So we started writing it."
He added: "Let's be clear, it's not a remake. We never wanted to (make a sequel). The studio didn't approach us... We went to them, and the studio didn't get it at all. The real reason we're doing this is because the script is hilarious! We love the story."
Dumb And Dumber To comes 11 years after the prequel, Dumb And Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, and will be a sequel to 1994 comedy hit, Dumb And Dumber.
Peter admitted the last film failed, saying it was "another piece of s***".
"Showing them as teenagers is pointless: teenagers are all dumb. What's funny is when they're 45 years old and they're still dumb," he explained. "The film begins in Rhode Island, where it all started 18 years ago."
Bobby added: "In every film, a character has what's called a narrative arc. In Dumb And Dumber To, they haven't evolved at all. They aren't any smarter, they're just 20 years older."
Dumb And Dumber To will hit UK screens in December.
