Fincher: Ben perfect for Gone Girl
David Fincher has said Ben Affleck was the right choice for Gone Girl because he knows "what it's like to be hunted".
The actor is playing Nick Dunne in the movie, who is linked to his wife Amy's (Rosamund Pike) death when she disappears on their fifth wedding anniversary.
And director David told Entertainment Weekly that Ben - who was at the centre of a media circus himself when he dated singer Jennifer Lopez - was the perfect actor for the big screen adaptation of Gillian Flynn's novel.
He said: "We knew we needed somebody who was charming and could be seductive, who could be a ladies' man, a guy's guy, a frat boy. But most important, [someone] who had the wits and experience of knowing that situation.
"The gift of having Ben Affleck is that this is a guy who knows. He knows what a lose-lose situation is and understands what's funny about it, however sad."
Ben admitted that being under the glare of the spotlight in his own life helped prepare him for the role.
"It wasn't something I had to do a lot of research for," said the star, who is now married to actress Jennifer Garner.
"I knew what it was like to have the tabloid world paying attention to me and ascribing negative motivations to whatever I might be engaging in. I knew what it was to be cast in a soap opera I had no control over."
Gone Girl, which also stars Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry and Carrie Coon, will be in cinemas in October.
