Keanu Reeves had been tipped to take the lead role in the Hollywood version, but Variety reports that the Tron: Legacy star is now the frontrunner for the part, although no firm offer has yet been made.
The actor was previously said to be shortlisted for the role of Kaneda, alongside Michael Fassbender, Chris Pine, Justin Timberlake and Joaquin Phoenix.
Robert Pattinson, Andrew Garfield and James McAvoy are rumoured to be vying for the part of Kaneda's best friend Tetsuo, having been sent the screenplay.
Based on Katsuhiro Otomo's manga, the action is tipped to be relocated from Tokyo to Manhattan.
The remake of the 1988 Japanese film, which is to be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and written by Harry Potter's Steve Kloves, is set to start production in spring 2012.
