Gerwig: Friendships heart of film
Greta Gerwig has revealed that her new film Frances Ha is based on her own experiences of intense friendships.
The Arthur actress wrote and stars in the film about a young woman trying to make a career as a dancer in New York and hanging on to her relationship with a friend who is growing up and moving on.
She said: "I went to an all women's college which was a breeding ground for really intense, dysfunctional female friendships. There was a group of six of us. I lived with them for three years after school, we were totally dysfunctional but in love with each other.
"If someone started dating someone else it was seen as a total betrayal. We all wanted to buy a house together. So yeah, definitely I've been through that."
Greta said she was keen to make a film where the main relationship was the friendship between two women.
"There are some movies like this about women but not a whole heck of a lot, and not ones that exclusively deal with friendships and ambition that doesn't really have a place for traditional, heterosexual romance," she said.
The actress also spoke about how much she enjoyed the dance scenes in Frances Ha.
She said: "I grew up dancing, I love dance on film and watching dancers. I love dancing more than I'm good at dancing, but I really do love it."
