Grainne Seoige's marriage was over more than a year-and-a-half ago, friends have revealed.
The popular Irish TV presenter announced on Tuesday that she and her husband, TV3 sports editor Stephen Cullinane, were to separate after eight years of marriage.
Pals revealed that the marriage had hit the rocks by Christmas 2008, and the couple were effectively living separate lives for “at least 18 months”.
Sources close to the presenter said the 36-year-old and her estranged husband had become distant, and had been experiencing serious relationship problems for a considerable time.
“The only people who weren't surprised by the announcement are those in RTE,” revealed a senior RTE source. “They took the decision to separate a few months ago. It's sad, but life goes on,” said an insider.
