Guillermo rallies Pacific Rim fans
Guillermo Del Toro has sent out a rallying call to Pacific Rim fans to counter bad publicity.
The filmmaker's aliens-vs-robots movie has garnered some criticism in the press but he took to fan site Deltorofilms.com to encourage his supporters.
The Pan's Labyrinth director wrote on the site's forum: "We just need to keep working. Our numbers are going up. Not in a minor way. Significant. We are on the right track."
His post was under a thread started about a recent Variety article titled "Is Pacific Rim doomed to be this year's Battleship?".
Pacific Rim does not have the safety net of being based on a comic and is up against Grown Ups 2 starring Adam Sandler and Chris Rock on its opening weekend.
Guillermo admitted it was dangerous to compete with a sequel: "Whatever sequel opens will have, by definition, higher awareness and numbers across the board, but we are moving strongly in the right direction."
But despite early tracking not looking great, he said he was confident the film could pick up momentum in time for its opening weekend.
He wrote: "We are working on it. We concentrated on the core for a long time - but we are barely started on the campaign. I am seeing the ads now and I am seeing outdoors and we are now supplementing what we did with character or tone. Thank you all for your good faith and love."
