British screenwriter Christopher Nolan was a winner at America's Writers Guild Awards for the sci-fi smash hit Inception.
Nolan took the best original screenplay award and Aaron Sorkin won best adapted screenplay for Facebook drama The Social Network, announced at simultaneous WGA ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York.
The wins make the writers favourites in the same categories at the Oscars on February 27.
The Social Network, which Sorkin adapted from the Ben Mezrich book The Accidental Billionaires, was also considered an early favourite for a best picture Oscar, but it has been trumped in recent award ceremonies by The King's Speech.
The King's Speech was not eligible for a WGA award because it was not made under the union's contract guidelines.
