EastEnders' spin-off Redwater has reportedly seen its ratings plummet since the first episode aired.

The drama, set in the fictional Irish village of Redwater, premiered earlier this month with around 4.9 million viewers tuning in to see soap favourites Jessie Wallace and Shane Richie return as Kat and Alfie Moon.

The couple arrived in the small picturesque village to try and trace Kat's long-lost son, prompting a Broadchurch-style mystery.

However, despite a promising first episode, The Sun is reporting the series has suffered a decline of almost two million viewers.

A source said: "The ratings have tumbled from 4.9mllion in episode one to just 2.9million in episode two.

"With such low figures so early into the series they will struggle to build it back up again. It’s a big blow for Jessie and Shane too."

Producers had hoped the popularity of the couple would see EastEnders fans tuning into the series.
