Knightley's shot of Dutch courage

Keira Knightley has revealed that she had to down shots of vodka before filming two spanking scenes in her latest film.

The actress, 26, told The Hollywood Reporter she almost turned down the role of a Russian woman with serious psychological issues in David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method, because of the scene.

She said: "(I did) a couple of shots of vodka - definitely - beforehand, and then a couple of glasses of champagne as a celebration of never having to do that again!"

Keira's character is spanked violently by her lover, psychiatrist Carl Jung, played by Michael Fassbender, in the movie, which has been showing at the Toronto Film Festival.

She said: "There was a box which he (Michael) hit, so he was nowhere near me, thank God! I did actually say to Michael before one of the scenes - I was like, 'I've got a security guard outside.

"'You touch me and he's gonna break your legs!' And he was like, 'Keira, you're tied to a bed. You're not really in a position to say that.' I said, 'I guess you're right'..."

Before taking on the role, Keira rang Cronenberg and told him she was worried about the scenes, but the director, whose films include The Fly and Crash, said that they would not be voyeuristic or sexy.
