Leighton Meester has insisted it was the script that made her say yes to new film Life Partners, and working with husband Adam Brody was just an added bonus.
The 28-year-old Gossip Girl star tied the knot with The OC star Adam, 34, in February and they both appear in the new comedy with Gillian Jacobs about two co-dependent best friends, one straight, one a lesbian, and the man who comes between them.
Leighton told the new issue of Nylon magazine: "There wasn't time to ask if we wanted to do this together. I was reading the script. I loved the part and loved the movie.
"I was going to the meeting that day and he called me and said, 'They offered me this role'."
She added: "As far as scripts go, the roles of women standing alone on their own as whole, real, full people are few and far between.
"So with both of those roles [Life Partners and Like Sunday, Like Rain - her most recent parts], what I loved is that neither of them are centred around romantic relationships.
"They're flawed, real human beings that I could break down and really enjoy playing. They're like me, in a way."
Off-set, Leighton is ready to start a family with her own life partner Adam, following in the footsteps of her Gossip Girl co-star Blake Lively.
She said: "Most people I know are starting to get married. It'll be kids next. I like the grown-up stuff. I like having a house. I've got dogs."
