Liam Hemsworth's weighty issues

Liam Hemsworth has revealed that he really had to go hungry for his role in The Hunger Games.

The Australian actor admitted it wasn't easy for him to lose weight to play impoverished teenager Gale Hawthorne in the first big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins' novels, which also stars Jennifer Lawrence.

"My character lives in District 12, he's living in a depression. So he's not eating a lot - I lost quite a bit of weight for the role," he said at the film's London premiere.

But he added: "I find it much easier to gain weight than to lose weight. It's tough not eating."

The 22-year-old had previously joked that his elder brother Chris, who starred in Thor, teased him about the weight loss, telling Access Hollywood: "My brother Chris texted me, saying, 'Hunger Games, not eating games'."

Liam - who starred in The Last Song alongside girlfriend Miley Cyrus - said the science-fiction futuristic thriller, which also stars Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson and Lenny Kravitz, can appeal to both men and women.

"I'm a guy and I'm a big fan of the books. The lead character is an extremely courageous girl and I'm all about it," he said.

:: The Hunger Games opens in cinemas on March 23.
