Linney joins McKellen Sherlock film

Laura Linney has joined the cast of new Sherlock Holmes film A Slight Trick Of The Mind, starring Sir Ian McKellen.

The Lord Of The Rings star is to play an ageing and retired version of Conan Doyle's famous detective who is still haunted by an unsolved case from 50 years ago, in the film directed by Bill Condon.

Laura will play Sherlock's housekeeper Mrs Munro, Variety revealed. Hattie Morahan of Bletchley Circle and Summer In February has also been cast.

Adapted from Mitch Cullin's novel by Jeffrey Hatcher, A Slight Trick Of The Mind will see Sherlock losing his memory, and without his sidekick Dr Watson to help, he can only remember fragments: a confrontation with an angry husband and a secret bond with his beautiful but unstable wife.

The project marks the fourth collaboration between Laura and director Bill, following their work together on Kinsey, The Fifth Estate and the pilot episode of The Big C.

The film also reunites Bill with Sir Ian, who he worked with on Gods And Monsters.

Filming is expected to begin in the UK this summer.
